Google vs. Microsoft: Santa-tracking systems go out of sync

12 hrs.

Not even Santa Claus can avoid getting drawn into the tech clash between Google and Microsoft: The two companies have set up separate online systems to track where the Jolly Old Elf has been on Christmas Eve?? but they show him simultaneously at widely separated locations, delivering presents at a dramatically different rate.

On the official "NORAD Tracks Santa" website, powered this year by Microsoft, Santa Claus was in Rome, well past the 3-billion-present mark in his holiday rounds. At the same time, Google's Santa Tracker showed him buzzing through Agadez in the African country of Niger, not quite up to the 1-billion-present mark.

They can't both be right. Can they? Here's the word from Search?Engine?Land's Danny Sullivan, who has been tracking the discrepancy in this year's?Santa-tracking software:

"NORAD explains that it uses everything from radar to jets to track Santa. Google doesn?t explain its technology, but I suspect it tries to triangulate Santa using his cell phone signal or use of wifi hotspots.

"As for why NORAD shows Father Christmas delivering three?times the number of gifts that Google is listing, perhaps NORAD?s radars can better pinpoint presents while Google might be doing estimating.?Meanwhile? both services sometimes show presents being delivered over oceans! And why is NORAD showing Santa arriving in some places at 9pm rather than midnight, as has been the case in the past?"

Maybe this is just the sort of thing that happens when you switch software: NORAD (also known as the North American Aerospace Defense Command) has been monitoring Santa's flight as a public service since 1955, and five years ago, it teamed up with Google to keep up with the crush of Web traffic. This year, however, the NORAD Santa operation parted ways with Google and partnered with Microsoft instead.

Google stayed in the Santa game by setting up its own tracking system for "Santa's Dashboard" and Google Maps?? a system that doesn't make use of NORAD's tracking data.

Today, Canadian Maj. Gen. Andre Viens, a spokesman for NORAD, declined to intervene in the Santa-tracking war.

"It's not affecting our tracking," Viens told MSNBC. "We're not in competition with anyone. Our role, and we've been doing that for more than?50 years, is to track Santa and make sure that he has a safe and secure journey throughout the world, and throughout North America in particular."

TODAY:?Follow Santa's Christmas Eve flight

PhotoBlog: Inside NORAD's command center

Maybe it shouldn't be surprising to find?that it's so difficult to get a firm fix on Santa's position, considering how many presents he has to deliver in so little time. Some experts have speculated that the only way Santa could ?deliver gifts (or lumps of coal) to billions of homes in the course of just a few hours would be if he somehow harnessed quantum teleportation. And once you accept that, it's not that big of a leap to detect Santa in two places at once.

Alan Boyle is the science editor for NBC News Digital, and has been tracking NORAD's Santa tracker since 1998.?Boyle's usual online?hangout is over at Cosmic Log.

Bankruptcy: Tips And Advice For Getting A Fresh Start | Siben ...

TIP! Even if you start a new job prior to declaring bankruptcy, do not change your plans! It is possible that bankruptcy is still your best course of action. Your timing can make a tremendous difference when filing for personal bankruptcy.

When in debt and filing a claim, don?t worry anymore. The Internet, and this article in particular, is full of great advice for navigating the complexities of bankruptcy. Read the information provided here to see if bankruptcy can be avoided.

TIP! The two main kinds of bankruptcy are Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. Make sure you understand them so you know what is best for you.

Do not use the word ?shame?, if you go bankrupt. The bankruptcy process makes people feel guilty and ashamed. Do not let these negative feelings influence your decision. Keeping an optimistic view as you deal with your financial woes is the most productive way of dealing with a bankruptcy.

TIP! While going through personal bankruptcy precedings, stay abreast of what your lawyer is doing on your behalf. Talk on the phone or send emails on a regular basis to stay informed.

Although it may be difficult to get financing after filing for bankruptcy, it will not be impossible by any means. Although it could be true for some people, it is possible to obtain a better credit score than what you had before you filed. You have to make certain to pay on time after you file so that you can re-establish a good credit score.

TIP! A useful tip is to make sure you are ready for the possibility that your case is dismissed. If you are aware of the consequences prior to the denial happening, you will be mentally prepared for what could follow, such as car or home loss.

Keep working to improve your situation. Many times you can get repossess property back once bankruptcy has been filed. If it has been 90 days or less between the repossession of your property and your filing, you might be able to get your property back. Speak with a lawyer that will provide you with guidance for the entire thing.

TIP! Remember that just because you have filed for personal bankruptcy it will not cause you to lose everything you own. You can often keep personal property.

Know that bankruptcy in the end may be your best bet for restoring your credit, as opposed to the continuous pattern of missing or making late payments on what you owe. Though bankruptcies can remain on your credit record for 10 years, it is possible to begin credit repair initiatives immediately. Among the advantages of bankruptcy is that of a clean slate.

TIP! Bankruptcy is never a way to avoid paying your fair share of federal taxes. Some people who file pay their taxes with credit cards, then immediately file for bankruptcy on those cards.

Some attorneys may offer to contact creditors in regard to any delinquent accounts in your name. All you have to do is provide the number. Your creditor can then call and confirm that this debt is included in your bankruptcy filing. That will help you avoid them in the future.

TIP! Make sure you understand which debt obligations are likely to be discharged. You will still be responsible for most student loans.

Exercise some caution in repaying your debts when you know a bankruptcy filing in your future. Find out from a bankruptcy attorney what a court needs to see as a cut off date for the last time you pay anyone you owe money to. Find out more about legal requirements before making your decision.

TIP! If there is an error and your bankruptcy claim is closed, it is possible to file again. However, if this is the case, the automatic stay will only cover you for 30 days the second time you file.

You should never pay for your first consultation with a bankruptcy attorney. Make the most of this free consultation by asking lots of questions. Most attorneys offer free initial consultations, and you should take advantage of the chance to interview multiple practitioners. Only make your decision if all your questions and concerns are adequately addressed. It is not necessary to make a final decision right away. So you have sufficient time to speak with a number of lawyers.

TIP! Do not forget to make quality time for friends and family members. Filing for bankruptcy, and all that comes with it, can be hard to handle at times.

Don?t file for bankruptcy if it is not completely necessary. Consolidation could be the avenue you need to get your finances back in order. The bankruptcy process takes forever to finish and is very nerve-wracking. You should be aware that there are some negative ramifications to it, like extreme damage to your credit score. This is why you must ensure that bankruptcy is the only option left for you.

TIP! Find the right time to take action. Proper timing is important, especially when it comes to personal bankruptcy.

Before you visit a lawyer, write down some questions you want to ask them. Every second you spend with the lawyer will cost you money. To save money and time, take a list of concerns and questions before seeing a lawyer. You should thoroughly comprehend everything that is happening.

TIP! If you believe that bankruptcy proceedings may be the answer to your financial woes, you should make haste to learn about the process. It can be difficult to ask for help, but as you wait, you accrue more debt.

Planning can make a big difference. Take the time you need to plan properly. If possible, just try to avoid filing for bankruptcy. Once you have a plan, you?ll be ready for whatever happens

95% Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

All Critics (63) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (60) | Rotten (3)

Her life, and her work, transcended what we think of as "fashion." Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel celebrates a unique and uniquely determined woman.

Many people remember some of Diana Vreeland's famous pronouncements ("I adore pink! It is the navy blue of India!") but few remember actually hearing her speak. The documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel takes care of that.

For fashionphiles and pop culture vultures, there's much to devour.

Diana Vreeland is both history lesson and sentimental love letter to a fashion titan.

Legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland was the consummate dreamer, a romantic who never looked back and propelled society forward.

A feast for fashion-history buffs and anyone who applauds unstoppable eccentricity.

A lively portrait that's as colorful, dynamic and oh-so-fashionable as one of Vreeland's magazine spreads.

An otherwise fine profile of American fashion magazine doyen Diana Vreeland is let down by pedestrian production.

She wanted you to look and look again, and this film is full of images which make you do just that.

There's something marvellously comic about her, an effect reinforced by her refined yet raucous baritone voice.

This pleasurable documentary is jammed packed with images from magazines, photoshoots and newsreels of a life well lived, but also lots of historical footage of the life Vreeland imagined she had too.

...more of an energetic and affectionate sketch than a revealing portrait of this oversized personality, but one has to wonder if the woman who celebrated glittering surfaces would have wanted it any other way.

This fascinating documentary reveals that Vreeland (who died in 1989, aged 86) was an original: a dynamic woman with energy to spare and an infectious lust for life

What makes this such a joy to watch is not just the timeline of fashion highlights, but Vreeland's unique perspective on life.

The filmmakers have done a fine job corralling so many fantastic tales from Vreeland's life.

"Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" is an intriguing portrait of a true original; you only wish the movie had half the color and verve of its subject.

A lively movie, and in the case of its appearance-obsessed subject, it feels right that all it does is skim the surface.

[Vreeland's] influence on twentieth-century culture was large, and it's celebrated here with affection, dedication and skill--but very little critical detachment.

Though unwilling to dig too deeply into what seems an imperfect private life, it still serves as a splendid introduction to a unique personality.

Chinese Rocket Lofts Turkish Earth Observation Satellite

PARIS ? The Turkish government's ambitions to become a force in satellite Earth observation took a step forward on Dec. 19 with the successful launch, aboard a Chinese rocket, of the Turkish Gokturk-2 medium-resolution optical surveillance satellite.

Turkish officials said the 400-kilogram Gokturk-2, made mainly in Turkey but with an optical imager provided by South Korea, was safely in orbit at nearly 700 kilometers in altitude and had sent signals to a ground station in northern Norway.

The satellite was launched aboard a Chinese Long March 2D vehicle operated from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu Province. It was the 19th launch of a Chinese Long March rocket, all variants included, for 2012 ? a year Chinese launch service officials had forecast would be particularly active for the rocket line.

Gokturk-2 is Turkey's second Earth observation satellite, following the small Rasat satellite launched in 2011 aboard a Russian-Ukrainian Dnepr rocket. [Best?Rocket?Launch Photos?of 2012]

Rasat has a ground resolution of about 7.5 meters, meaning it can detect objects of that diameter and larger. Gokturk-2 has a 2.5-meter resolution and includes 15 gigabytes of image storage capacity.

Turkish Science, Industry and Technology Minister Nihat Ergun said before the launch that Gokturk-2 should be seen as an investment in high technology, and a signal of Turkey's determination to have its own, restrictions-free use of Earth observation imagery.

Turkey's defense forces have purchased another Gokturk satellite from Telespazio of Rome and Thales Alenia Space of France and Italy. This 1,000-kilogram spacecraft will be similar to the two French Pleiades satellites now in orbit, with a 70-centimeter ground resolution in black and white and 2.8 meters in color.

The satellite's development has taken longer than expected, and it is not expected to be launched before late 2014. Telespazio's contract, valued at 250 million euros ($325 million) when signed in 2009, includes establishing a satellite integration and test facility in Turkey as well as a Gokturk ground station.

Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio are thus doing for Turkey what rival Astrium Satellites of Europe is doing for Kazakhstan in providing a satellite, a training regime and an initial satellite test facility to a nation that has made clear it ultimately wants to be able to build satellites of its own.

The Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council and Turkish Aerospace Industries built Gokturk-2. Ergun said the entire Gokturk-2 project is valued at 140 million Turkish Lira ($79 million).

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh expects Justin Smith to find a way to play Sunday at Seattle

SANTA CLARA -- Justin Smith's arm injury might not be serious enough to sideline him for Sunday's game at Seattle, based on 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh's comments Tuesday morning on KNBR 680-AM.

Asked if Smith could practice this week, Harbaugh responded: "Everyone affectionately refers to Justin Smith around here as 'The Cowboy.' I expect we'll see The Cowboy.

"Knowing what I know of Justin Smith and the situation, yeah I think the Cowboy will be around. Cowboy will be saddled up, ropin' and ridin'.

" If it's humanly possible, The Cowboy will be out there, ropin' and ridin'. "

Smith started his 185th consecutive regular-season game Sunday night but couldn't finish it after sustaining a third-quarter elbow injury. The New England Patriots took advantage of his advantage by rallying from a 28-point deficit to tie the score at 31, but the 49ers still pulled out a 41-34 victory.

Smith declined to reveal the severity of his injury -- or even which arm, though he glanced at his left elbow -- during a post-game interview. He took an MRI exam on Monday.

Smith entered Sunday's game with a team-high 77 quarterback pressures and 52 quarterback hits, along with three sacks. His presence has played an integral role in Aldon Smith's 19 1/2 sacks, which are tied for the league lead with Houston's J.J. Watt.

If Smith is sidelined, however, his likely replacement on the line would be Ricky Jean Francois, who came on in relief Sunday

night and produced a fourth-quarter sack.

'Always smiling' Daniel Barden laid to rest in Newtown

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? For a third straight day Wednesday, funeral processions rolled through a grieving Connecticut town trying to make sense of the massacre of 20 first-graders and six adults in an elementary school less than two weeks before Christmas.

Dr. Joseph Young, an optometrist, said he has already been to one funeral and plans to attend two or three more.

"The first few days, all you heard was helicopters and now at my office all I hear is the rumble of motorcycle escorts and funeral processions going back and forth throughout the day," he said. "It's difficult. It's just a constant reminder."

Most students in Newtown went back to school Tuesday except those from Sandy Hook Elementary, where a gunman armed with a military-style assault rifle slaughtered the children and six teachers and administrators Friday. He also killed his mother at her home. If police know why, they have not said.

Students at Sandy Hook, which serves kindergarten through fourth grade, will resume classes in a formerly shuttered school in a neighboring community in January.

President Barack Obama on Wednesday pressed Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. He also called for stricter background checks for people who seek to purchase weapons and limited high capacity clips.

"This time, the words need to lead to action," said Obama, who set a January deadline for the recommendations.

In the meantime, mourners overlapped at back-to-back funerals that started Monday and will continue all week.

The first of Wednesday's funerals in Newtown was for 7-year-old Daniel Barden, a gap-toothed redhead and the youngest of three children whose family described him as "always smiling, unfailingly polite, incredibly affectionate, fair and so thoughtful towards others, imaginative in play, both intelligent and articulate in conversation: in all, a constant source of laughter and joy."

Hundreds of firefighters formed a long blue line outside St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church as bells sounded and bagpipes played. Daniel wanted to join their ranks one day, and many came from New York, where his family has relatives who are firefighters.

Family friend Laura Stamberg of New Paltz, N.Y., whose husband plays in a band with Daniel's father, Mark, said Daniel was a thoughtful boy who held doors for people and would sit with another child if he saw one sitting alone.

She said that on the morning of the shooting, Mark Barden played a game with his son and taught him a Christmas song on the piano.

"They played foosball and then he taught him the song and then he walked him to the bus and that was their last morning together," Stamberg said.

At the same time, in the town of Stratford, family and friends gathered to say goodbye to Victoria Soto, a 27-year-old teacher who has been hailed as a hero for dying while trying to shield her students, some of whom managed to escape.

"She had the perfect job. She loved her job," said Vicky Ruiz, a friend of Soto's since first grade. Every year, she said, Soto described her students the same way. "They were always good kids. They were always angels," even if, like typical first-graders, they might not always listen, Ruiz said.

Students Charlotte Bacon and Caroline Previdi were to be laid to rest later Wednesday, and calling hours were being held for popular 47-year-old principal Dawn Hochsprung. She and school psychologist Mary Sherlach rushed toward Lanza in an attempt to stop him and paid with their lives.

The massacre continued to reverberate around America as citizens and lawmakers debated whether Newtown might be a turning point in the often-polarizing national discussion over gun control.

Private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management announced Tuesday it plans to sell its stake in Freedom Group, maker of the Bushmaster rifle, following the school shootings. In Pittsburgh, Dick's Sporting Goods said it is suspending sales of modern rifles nationwide because of the shooting. The company also said it's removing all guns from display at its store closest to Newtown.

Lawmakers who have joined the call to consider gun control as part of a comprehensive, anti-violence effort next year included 10-term House Republican Jack Kingston, a Georgia lawmaker elected with strong National Rifle Association backing.

The National Rifle Association, silent since the shootings, said in a statement that it was "prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again." It gave no indication what that might entail.

And no indication has been made publicly about the motive of 20-year-old Adam Lanza, who, clad all in black, broke into Sandy Hook Elementary and opened fire on students and staff.

Authorities say the horrific events of Friday began when Lanza shot his mother, Nancy, at their home, and then took her car and some of her guns to the nearby school.

Investigators have found no letters or diaries that could explain the attack.

Researchers Create Ultrastretchable Wires Using Liquid Metal

One would think so.

But you could design for that, simply by using the smallest diameter as your critical dimension when selecting wire size.

Of course it also allows for some new circuit elements, those that can measure stretch via voltage drop, which might be very useful in robotics or prosthetics.
In short it might not be as much of a detriment as it is an advantage.
