Flooring replacement can be very expensive. One inexpensive and simple option is to remove your existing flooring, and then add a stain in the color of your choice to the concrete below. The stain makes the concrete have a new industrial look that can match any decor.

TIP! It?s imperative that your contractor knows up front how much money you have to work with for home improvement projects. Honesty will ensure he is more inclined to stay on budget.

Maintaining a home improvement budgets goes a long way toward maintaining or increasing the value of your home, so aim for setting money aside as a budget for handing any repairs or upgrades. Set aside a specific amount of money to do home repairs and maintenance. If money is left over at the year?s end, it can go toward more home improvement work in the days to come.

TIP! Prior to doing any interior painting, take a damp cloth and wipe away dirt and dust from the wall surfaces. That helps the paint to stick to the walls that much more, and will help you avoid the hassle of frequent touch-ups or more coats of paint.

Staining the floors of your basement makes for an easy facelift. It can make the space look fresh and updated without the headache and costs associated with a replacement floor. A stained floor is also more durable and easy to clean. Search for stains that can add some extra shine and luster to your floors. An upgraded stain can give your basement a richer feel for less money than installing a new floor.

TIP! If you?ve recently had new carpeting or flooring installed, you can extend its great looks for years by establishing a rule banning the wearing of shoes. Make sure there are places to store shoes and offer slippers at the entrances so that everyone feels comfortable removing their shoes.

When doing home improvements on your own, consider purchasing high quality supplies and tools. It may seem more costly at first, but you will be happy you made the choice when the tools are still working at the end of your project. The better quality a product is, the longer it will last. Even though some quality tools can be a bit expensive, they save you a lot of money in the long run.

Rand holds near 1-week high vs dollar before GDP data

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The rand held near a one-week high and above a key resistance point in early Tuesday trade and looked likely to break that level if economic growth data overshot market expectations.

South Africa releases fourth quarter GDP data at 0930 GMT, the final piece of the economic growth jigsaw for 2012.

Economists expect growth to have picked up to 1.6 percent on a quarter-on-quarter basis, from 1.2 percent in the third quarter.

The statistics agency will also give the preliminary overall growth rate for 2012, a figure that is likely to influence the Treasury's growth and budget deficit calculations ahead of the 2013 budget speech on Wednesday.

By 0651 GMT, the rand was at 8.8590 to the dollar, not far off its close in New York on Monday.

"Any move in the rand is reflected in the euro. The Italian elections are causing real chaos in the forex markets. Expect volatility in the major currencies, reflected on the rand through our crosses," said Jim Bryson of Rand Merchant Bank, referring to Italy's apparent election gridlock.

However, the rand is unlikely to shift out of its 8.80-9.0 range unless GDP data is so far from expectations that investors start to factor in a local interest rate move next month.

"If it's that bad that we can start factoring in an interest rate cut, then that GDP data will move things," Bryson said.

The R186/R157 bond yield spread rose to a week high of 197 basis points. Dealers see the curve staying at elevated levels because of expectations of increased issuance from government, normally at the longer end of the yield curve.

"The view of subdued growth and in turn widening pressure on the budget deficit implies the risk that a higher borrowing requirement will be priced in in coming weeks," Tradition Analytics said in a note.

The yield on the 2026 issue dropped 4 basis points to 5.21 percent, while that on the 2015 issue gave up 2.5 basis points to 7.19 percent.

Nokia building TDSCDMA variants of the Lumia 520 and 720 for China Mobile

Nokia is a company that goes out of its way to create tailor-made versions of its smartphones for its Chinese fans. At today's keynote, Stephen Elop announced that those in the far East without the bones to buy a Lumia 920T will soon see local, TD-SCDMA, versions of the Lumia 520 and 720. The ultra-budget duo are expected to arrive in the second quarter of the year, with the 520 expected to cost around $180.

Telecom CEOs: US regulators better than Europe

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? The CEOs of AT&T, Vodafone and Telefonica ? three of the world's largest cellphone companies ? say U.S. regulators are doing better than their European counterparts in promoting faster wireless data networks.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson told an audience at Mobile World Congress, the world's largest cellphone trade show, that the U.S. practice of selling phone companies large swathes of space of the airwaves for perpetual use was helping encourage U.S. companies, including AT&T, to build out large networks using the latest "LTE" technology.

By contrast, many European countries only lease out space on their airwaves for eight- to 15-year terms. The perpetual licenses in the U.S. give phone companies the incentive to invest, Stephenson said.

Barnes & Noble looking to scale back on hardware efforts

B&N Nook Tablet

Barnes & Noble may be aiming to lower the investment it puts into its Nook hardware efforts, sources of the New York Times report. Following less than stellar results in its Nook division -- which encompasses e-readers, tablets and e-book sales -- B&N executives are looking into the amount of money they spend on devices that aren't directly profitable. The Nook tablets, which are well known for being cheap for their hardware and relatively easy to hack, are simply too low margin for the nation's largest book chain to be focusing on.

“They are not completely getting out of the hardware business, but they are going to lean a lot more on the comprehensive digital catalog of content,” reports the unnamed source.

The hope going forward, it seems, will be for B&N to focus on licensing its software and content to other manufacturers to take advantage of. This is a complete turn-around from last year, when the book giant expressed that Nook was to be the future of its business. It's also interesting to look at in comparison to Amazon, which seems quite content selling hardware at break-even (or even loss) prices to push sales of digital content. Companies can only take initiatives so far before they need to consider the bottom line, though.

Engineers and scientists from the University of Sheffield have pioneered a new technique to analyse PCBM, a material used in polymer photovoltaic cells, obtaining details of the structure of the material which will be vital to improving the cell's efficiency. The findings are published in Applied Physics Letters.

Working with the ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source at the Science and Technology Facilities Council Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, the researchers are the first to use a cutting-edge neutron scattering technique called SERGIS to analyse PCBM. The technique still very much in development has so far only been tested on samples with well-known, regular structures, such as diffraction gratings.

The experiment focused on crystallites of PCBM which were on the surface of a thin film of the solar cell material as the researchers could then verify their findings using other analysis techniques, such as atomic force microscopy. But they believe the technique could in future be used to analyse the material's structure deep inside the active layers of a solar cell. This will enable them to understand how different fabrication methods impact on the cell's structure, and therefore its efficiency.

Dr Alan Dunbar from Sheffield's Faculty of Engineering explains: "The SERGIS technique uses polarised neutrons which are bounced off the sample being tested. Where the resulting neutrons end up and how their polarisation has changed tells us information about the structure within our samples. The advantage of this type of technique is that because neutrons only interact weakly with the sample we can probe much deeper where many microscopy techniques cannot see."

"This is the first time the technique has been used to look at this material which is of real interest to science. It enabled us to map the size of the PCBM crystallites and the distance between them, both properties which are key to improving efficiency."

Research into photovoltaics is one of many areas of energy research conducted at the University of Sheffield, including wind power, nuclear power, biofuels, district heating and carbon capture.

SERGIS which stands for neutron spin echo resolved grazing incidence scattering can only be conducted in a few places worldwide, among them the ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source in Oxfordshire.
