Though it has been some years since their owner left this plane of existence, the guitars of George Harrison need not weep for loneliness or lack of use: they are about to be shown off and shared in a new iPad app planned for release next month. On Tuesday the George Harrison estate said that it was working with Bandwdth Publishing, which makes applications for mobile devices, to create a virtual showroom of that singer-songwriter?s trove of guitars that will make use of many of his personal recordings.
The iPad app, called ?The Guitar Collection: George Harrison,? will offer pictures of the guitars that display ?the scratches, dings and worn threads? in the instruments, a news release for the project said. Users can see 360-degree images of the guitars, created by the photographer and filmmaker Steven Sebring; read about their detailed history and the modifications Harrison made to them; and listen to tracks he played on them. The app also includes videos of the guitars being played by Ben Harper, Josh Homme, Mike Campbell and Harrison?s son, Dhani, as well as a conversation between Dhani Harrison and Conan O?Brien, the late-night television host and guitar enthusiast, about Harrison?s collection.
The app will cost $9.99 and is planned for release on Feb. 23.
