No highway bill for House next week (Politico)

House Republicans will not vote on Speaker John Boehner?s signature highway bill next week, as the legislation hangs in serious flux with no clear path forward.

Earlier this week, House Republican leadership was eyeing an 18-month extension of highway programs, as the five-year extension of the federal programs ran into head winds from lawmakers on issues ranging from its price tag to funding mechanisms to the way it funds mass transit programs. But they have all but abandoned that plan after healthy resistance from rank-and-file lawmakers, according to several sources with knowledge of negotiations.

?Apparently our members don?t think too highly of [an 18-month extension],? Boehner said Thursday. ?I would only look at it as a fallback measure. We ought to do this the right way. We?ve had five-year, six-year reauthorizations of the highway bill. I think it?s important for the states and for those who want to invest in this arena to have a broad horizon so they know where they?re going. And a five-year bill?s the best way to get there.?
