Monti: Italy's financial situation makes progress

ROME (AP) ? Italy's financial situation has made progress compared with last year, the premier said Sunday, believing the country will eventually emerge from the bleak economic crisis.

Mario Monti said the condition of the economy was "worse" in 2011, before he was appointed to lead Italy down a tough path of austerity, new taxes and pension reforms.

But Monti, an economist who put together a government of technocrats in November, didn't venture any timeframe for the hoped-for exit from financial distress.

"I work daily to grapple with the crisis," Monti said in a speech to politicians, labor and industry figures to the Adriatic beach resort town of Rimini.

"But are we really in crisis? A year ago, we thought we were less so, but perhaps we were more so," Monti argued. "I see the moment approaching in which we'll emerge."

He explained that by pushing through Parliament measures that politicians had avoided for years, like reining in Italy's generous pension system, the country is in many ways in better shape now than when he took the helm.

Monti was appointed to replace media mogul Silvio Berlusconi, who resigned under intense market pressures as Italy's borrowing costs soared against a backdrop of a high deficit, sluggish economy and stubborn unemployment.

With elections looming in spring, there is the risk that political leaders will increasingly resist Monti's prescription for financial healing, which so far has included the revival of property taxes, higher sales taxes, slashing spending and raising the age Italians can retire with generous pensions. Monti has said repeatedly that he won't run for a new term.

In his speech, Monti lavished praise on lawmakers from a wide political spectrum, who so far have generally given him his way in his anti-crisis strategy. "Daily I see the miracle" of rival politicians pulling together to back his proposals, Monti said.

One of the few political parties to oppose Monti has been Berlusconi's ex-ally, the regional Northern League. But the League, weakened by scandals, has lost much of the clout it had enjoyed as the lynchpin party in three Berlusconi coalitions since the early 1990s.

Referring to the widespread legislative backing he has so far experienced, Monti said that "it wasn't easy to predict that they would have been imbued with a sense of responsibility. " Still, Monti said, Parliament during his government has "taken decisions that were put off for years."

But he lamented that Italy's youths have paid a "very high" price in terms of bleak job prospects, because politicians avoided for years had avoided tough action, such as labor market reforms.

Monti boasted that Italy now has "more respect, credibility and even influence in Europe" thanks to Parliament's achievements. As a highly respected economist not representing any political party, Monti has been seen in Italy ? and in Europe ? as being in a strong position to challenge German Chancellor Angela Merkel when it comes to forging European-wide decisions aimed at saving the euro.

Referring to growing anxiety in the eurozone that Greece might have to drop out of the single currency grouping, Monti said it would be "tragedy if it (the euro) became, due to our shortcomings, a factor of disintegration that will revive the prejudices of the north (of Europe) against the south and vice versa."

DreamWorks breathes fire into arena shows with "Dragon"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - To Ray Marino, $374 seemed a small price to pay to see flying dragons, a cast of wisecracking, back-flipping Vikings and the looks of wonder from his children as they watched a live stage show -- not just a movie.

"You get to kind of feel it, rather than just watch it on screen," Marino said at the intermission of "How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular," a massive arena show that played recently in New York and is based on the 2010 film from DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc.

DreamWorks, the studio behind the "Shrek" and "Madagascar" film franchises, is transforming its popular family movies into stage productions, extending their product lives in a strategy used successfully by The Walt Disney Co with its "Disney on Ice" arena show and Broadway shows.

Dreamworks teamed up with theater production group Global Creatures -- whose animatronics arm had already made another arena show based on dinosaurs -- and promoter S2BN Entertainment to create the live show.

The response from Marino -- who with his wife surprised their children, ages 7 and 10, with the front-section seats -- is exactly what DreamWorks hopes to get in cities across North America. The show, which recently played at New York's Nassau Coliseum, is now in Montreal. There are plans to continue to other U.S. cities through 2013, and makers of the show hope to tour next in Europe and Asia.

The show, which made its U.S. debut in June, tells of a Viking teenager named Hiccup and his tribe of dragon slayers. It uses 23 animatronically engineered dragon puppets, some with wingspans of up to 46 feet and weighing over 1.6 tons.

The story, in which Hiccup befriends a dragon and ends generations of war between man and fire-breathing beast, is loosely based on a popular children's book by Cressida Cowell and follows the 2010 DreamWorks movie that made nearly $500 million at worldwide box offices.

Action scenes are created through projected animation surrounded by real smoke and columns of fire. Cable-suspended beasts lift off the stage to achieve what the show's makers say may be its best feature, flying dragons.

"It's almost bigger than Broadway because you can't achieve what we do in ... theater," said Gavin Sainsbury, head of puppetry. "It's the DreamWorks version of turning their amazing film into a live theatrical extravaganza."

FIRE-BREATHING BUSINESS

Makers of the production would not comment on ticket sales but pointed to full arenas, positive blog posts, and solid reviews as evidence of a good reception.

"We're excited by the momentum the show has right now," said Bill Damaschke, DreamWorks' chief creative officer, noting the show was the company's largest stage production yet and was still in the early stages.

In 2011, a live U.S. touring show based on the DreamWorks film "Madagascar" was cut short without a reason given by the company. And past DreamWorks stage productions have not been hits like Disney on Ice, which has played for decades, or Broadway stage musicals like "The Lion King" and "Beauty and the Beast," both based on popular Disney films.

"The Lion King," for instance, ousted "The Phantom of the Opera" this past April from its long reign atop of the list of all-time Broadway box office hits after generating gross ticket sales of just over $853.8 million, Disney said.

DreamWorks' "Shrek, the Musical," which has been playing in London's West End for over a year, posted a second-quarter operating loss of approximately $5 million, according to the company's last earnings call on July 31. That show cost $25 million to create, according to a person near the production.

The live "How to Train Your Dragon Spectacular" cost about$20 million, according to Damaschke.

The show's ultimate success could be helped by a new television series, based on the books and movie, set for this fall on Cartoon Network. A film sequel is planned for 2014.

The challenge in getting people to come to the live shows, said show director Nigel Jamieson, is to get the word out that it isn't just "people running around in foam suits with a few kites pretending to be dragons."

The recent performance in the Nassau Coliseum was nearly full. Glowing Viking horns and sparklers punctuated the darkness as families waited after intermission. Children waved replicas of the dragons.

"It's pretty awesome," said Abby Marino, 7.

Fake followers newest ploy, accusation in politics

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? Forget ballot box irregularities. There's a virtual dust-up under way over how Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney amassed more than 100,000 new Twitter followers in just one weekend.

It may seem trivial, but not to social networking junkies or campaigns mindful of the need to project a digital image of popularity and power.

An analysis by the technology firm Barracuda Labs found most of the Twitter users who followed Romney over that July weekend were probably fake, although it's impossible to know who's behind the spike: Romney's campaign, a supporter or an opponent. Romney went from 673,000 to 814,000 followers during that time, though that number has since risen to more than 861,000. President Barack Obama has more than 18 million followers.

Zac Moffatt, digital director for Romney's campaign, said the campaign did not purchase the followers and the number is not something they care about.

"If winning were about having the most Twitter followers, Obama would get blown up by Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber," Moffatt said. "It's whether people are retweeting or sharing. That is what is of value to us."

Retweeting is passing someone else's message on to the people who follow you on Twitter.

Brian Frederick, a professor of political science at Massachusetts' Bridgewater State University, said some lesser-known candidates might see a benefit from bulked-up followers if it means reporters and activists take them more seriously. It's a way for a candidate to create an illusion of popularity.

But Wendy Schiller, a political science professor at Brown University, said there are no upsides and many downsides for any campaign that fakes its following because voters don't really care about the numbers.

"They do care if you're a fraud. They do care if you're lying about who supports you," Schiller said. "Why risk your credibility as a politician by engaging in that?"

Social media can be key in motivating campaign supporters, although experts say quality is more important than quantity. About 80 people work in the Romney campaign's digital department, a large portion of them on social media, Moffatt said. The Obama campaign said social media allow the campaign to communicate directly with voters without a filter but would not say how many of its staffers are directly engaged in it.

Zach Green is chief executive of 140elect, a Twitter-specific political consulting service, and runs 2012twit.com, which keeps Twitter statistics on the Obama and Romney campaigns. While Obama has more followers and tweets more frequently than Romney, Green's statistics show Romney's tweets are more widely shared.

It's easy and inexpensive to purchase followers on Twitter. Websites advertise 10,000 Twitter followers for as little as $52. Twitter prohibits the use of such services, as does Facebook, which also prohibits providing false personal information and creating more than one personal account. But a fake name and an email address are enough to get around those prohibitions. Facebook estimates nearly 4 percent of its 950 million users are not actual people. Similar statistics for Twitter are unavailable because it is privately held.

Similar questions about fake followers swirled around Newt Gingrich, who last year denied reports he paid for any of his 1.3 million Twitter followers.

The issue has played out in lower-level races as well.

In Rhode Island, little-known Democratic congressional candidate Anthony Gemma has 937,000 followers, nearly double the number of people who live in his district. Incumbent Democrat David Cicilline has a comparatively puny 3,500 followers.

Gemma, a businessman, has been making unusual claims regarding social media for years. When he first ran for Congress in 2010, he boasted he had more connections than Obama on the professional networking site LinkedIn, a claim that left some people scratching their heads as to why it was even worth mentioning.

More recently, he has seen several wild spikes in his Twitter following, which has reached 1 million on a few occasions. Many of his followers are in far-flung places like Russia with no obvious connection to Rhode Island, or have no photo or personal information on their profiles and have never sent a tweet.

Gemma's campaign manager, Michelle Place Gleason, would not comment on whether the campaign had paid to bulk up its numbers. She said the flap hadn't eroded his credibility. His opponent's campaign has made plenty of noise about it.

"What kind of person buys and fakes friends to make it look like he's more popular than he is? It's really kind of pathetic," Cicilline's campaign manager, Eric Hyers, said. "This whole thing is bizarre. Who cares how many followers you have?"

That's probably what presidential candidate Mitt Romney was asking himself as he finished up an interview with Miami's Radio Mamb? on Monday, a station mainly targeted at Cuban exiles.

According to Mediaite.com, in light of the governor's imminent campaign stop at convicted cocaine trafficker Reinaldo Bermudez' El Palacio de los Jugos (The Palace of Juices), host Carlos Santana asked Romney, ?They?re waiting for you with a mamey and a guayaba ? Cuban fruits ? here in Miami, do you like those??

?I am a big fan of mango, papaya, and guava,? Romney answered. Well of course he's a fan of papaya, it is a superfruit after all.

Santana, stifling his laughter, added. ?There are mangos there too.? Great, but will there be papayas there?

Oops. Turns out, context is everything. The reason the host giggled when hearing Romney's response was because for many Cubans, "papaya" is slang for "vagina."

Well that was awkward... but it was an inadvertent faux pas, nowhere in the same league as Romney's true gaffe in in March 2007, when we was moving ahead with his 2008 run at the presidency.

"Hugo Chavez has tried to steal an inspiring phrase ? 'Patria o muerte, venceremos.' It does not belong to him. It belongs to a free Cuba," Romney said.

Well actually the phrase belongs to Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Unfortunately for Romney -- and according to TIME magazine -- it was directed at a "fiercely anti-Castro Latino Republican gathered for the Miami-Dade Lincoln Day Dinner."

Carrie Underwood Covers Guns N' Roses in Concert

This would explain why we love Kelly Clarkon and Carrie Underwood.

Aside from the natural talent of American Idol's two most successful champions, both these beauties have shown a penchant for fun and creativity. They are clearly enjoying their run in the spotlight, as evidenced last week by Clarkon's awesome cover of Eminem.

Now, Underwood has also stepped outside of her typical country genre, going all heavy mental on fans in Ontario this week at the Boots and Hearts Music Festival in Bowmanville.
