Prevention of fire and carbon monoxide Home - Home Improvement ...

Prevention of fire and carbon monoxide HomeAs the winter weather continues to blanket the country, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) urges consumers to play it safe in order to prevent fires in the home.

According to the USFA, home fires spike in winter. Cooking and home heating are the leading cause of residential building fires during the winter. Fire risk also increased with the use of supplemental heating, such as space heaters.

CPSC estimates that home heating was associated with an average of 33,300 fires and 180 fire deaths per year from 2005 to 2007.

Another serious threat in the winter months carbon monoxide (CO), known as the ?invisible killer? because it is a gas, colorless and odorless toxic. Any fuel burning appliances, including furnaces and fireplaces, a potential source of CO

Since 1999, there has been an increasing trend in unintentional, non-fire CO deaths associated with consumer products ? most of which related to heating systems and portable generators. CPSC staff estimated 184 CO poisoning deaths on average per year from 2005-2007 compared to 122 deaths per year from 1999-2001.

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are an important line of defense in the home, and they give consumers valuable time to escape. About two-thirds of fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms, or in homes where consumers have removed the battery alarm or where the battery dies. More recently, a tragic death in a house where the alarm can be produced differences:

In Citra, Florida, fire killed five children on November 8. Their house did not have smoke alarms.

In Penfield, NY, a man killed 54-year CO poisoning in November. Before his death, reportedly CO alarm goes off and taken home from home.

CPSC and USFA recommends that in addition to having working smoke and CO alarms, consumers should follow the following safety tips to prevent fires and CO poisoning:

Place space heaters on a flat and level floor.

Do not put a space heater carpet or carpet.

Keep space heaters at least three feet from bedding, silk, furniture, and other flammable materials.

Keep space heaters foot traffic.

Keep children and pets away from space heaters.

To avoid risk of fire, never leave a space heater on when you go to sleep or place a space heater close to any sleeping person.

Turn on your heater when you leave the area.

Never use gasoline in a kerosene space heater. Even small amounts of gasoline mixed with kerosene can increase the risk of fire.

There are people in the fireplace flues and chimneys inspected for leakage and blockage from creosote or debris every year.

Open the fireplace damper before lighting the fire and keep it open until the ashes are cool. An open damper may help prevent build up of toxic gases in the house.

Store fireplace ashes a fire-resistant container, and cover the container with a lid. Keep the container outdoors and away from flammable.

Dispose of fireplace ashes carefully, keeping them away from dry leaves, trash or other combustible materials.

Preventing CO Poisoning

Schedule an annual professional inspection of all fuel-burning home heating systems, including furnaces, boilers, fireplaces, wood stoves, water heaters, Chimneys, flues and vents.

NEVER operate a portable gasoline-powered generator in an enclosed space such as a garage, shed, or crawlspace, or in the home.

Keep portable generators as far away from your home and ?your neighbor?s home as possible ? away from open doors, windows or vents that could allow deadly carbon monoxide into the house.

When buying a space heater, ask the salesperson whether the heater is safety-certified. A certified heater has a safety certification mark. These heaters are the most up-to-date safety features. Unvented gas space heater that meets current safety standards will shut off if oxygen levels fall too low.

Do not use portable propane space heaters indoors or in any confined space, unless specifically designed for indoor use. Always follow the manufacturer?s directions for proper use.

Never use a gas or electric stoves heat homes. They are not intended for that purpose and can cause CO or fire hazard.

More information can be found on the Safety Alert CPSC, fire risk reduction for portable electric heaters.

Working ... The New Retirement

The majority of Americans no longer view retirement as a time to kick back and relax, new research shows.

A study from CareerBuilder revealed that 60 percent of workers over the age of 60 plan to look for new jobs after retiring from their current companies, up from 57 percent a year ago.

While some employees over 60 plan to work only a few more years, many expect to stay employed into their 70s. The research found that 15 percent of workers in their 60s think it will be at least 7 more years before they can fully walk away, while more than 10 percent don't think they'll ever be able to retire.

Brent Rasmussen, president of CareerBuilder North America, said that while most mature employees are putting off retirement largely due to financial concerns, some are making the choice willingly because they love working. In either case, older workers need to communicate clearly with their companies, he said.

"The majority of workers who have talked with their bosses about staying on past retirement found their companies to be open to retaining them," Rasmussen said.?"If you're approaching retirement age, but hope to continue working, an open line of communication is very important."

Older employees interested in working past retirement age will likely find a receptive job market. The study shows that employers are looking to hire more seasoned staff, with 48 percent of businesses planning to hire workers ages 50-plus this year. In addition, more than three-quarters of the companies surveyed are willing to consider applications from overqualified workers who are 50-plus, with 59 percent of employers believing mature candidates bring a wealth of knowledge to an organization and can mentor others.

CareerBuilder offers mature workers several tips for finding success in their job search, including:

  • Highlight experience:?When updating a resume or interviewing for a job, candidates should think of their experience in terms of both work-related and life skills. Whether it's strong leadership skills or a wherewithal to weather a tough economy, mature workers should use their ages to their advantage and play up the strengths that come with having more years under their belts.
  • Stay current: Workers of all ages are going back to school to increase their marketability.?Attending seminars and workshops or taking formal courses is a great way for older workers to keep their skills up to date, which can come in handy during an interview.
  • Find new ways to benefit the company: Those looking to stay with their current companies beyond retirement should come up with new ways to contribute to the organization outside of their day-to-day tasks. For example, some mature workers have reinvented themselves within their organizations by running mentorship programs or training new hires.
  • Network: Being in the workforce for an extended time gives mature workers the advantage of a broad professional network. Whether it's offline or online, they should reach out to former colleagues, vendors, clients, etc. to see where opportunities may arise.
  • Part-Time: More than half of workers ages 60-plus said they will most likely work part-time once retired. To find the right fit, these workers should check out job boards, staffing firms and other resources for part-time, freelance or temporary work.

The study was based on surveys of more than 680 U.S. workers ages 60 and older and more than 2,600 hiring managers and human resources professionals

James Brown Estate: South Carolina Supreme Court Nixes Estate Settlement

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? The South Carolina Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned a settlement divvying up the multimillion-dollar estate of James Brown, saying a former attorney general didn't follow the late soul singer's wishes in putting together the deal.

Attorney General Henry McMaster brokered a settlement in 2009 that split Brown's estate, giving nearly half to a charitable trust, a quarter to his widow, Tomi Rae Hynie, and leaving the rest to be split among his adult children.

But the justices ruled that the deal ignored Brown's wishes for most of his money to go to charity. The court also ruled the Godfather of Soul was of sound mind when he made his will before dying of heart failure on Christmas Day 2006 at age 73.

The court sent the estate back to a lower court to be reconsidered.

The justices did agree with the lower court's decision to remove Brown's original trustees. Members of Brown's family said they wanted them gone because the trustees mismanaged the estate until it was almost broke.

The court said it had no idea what the estate was worth, giving an estimate of $5 million to more than $100 million.

The justices harshly criticized McMaster, who stepped in to broker the settlement after the estate floundered in court for years. Under McMaster's deal, a professional manager took control of Brown's assets from the estate's trustees, wiping out crushing debt ? more than $20 million Brown had borrowed for a European comeback tour ? and opening the way for needy students to receive college scholarships. The plan allowed a financial manager to cut lucrative deals that put Brown's music on national and international commercials for products such as Chanel perfume and Gatorade.

Chief Justice Jean Toal suggested Wednesday that, if the settlement was allowed to stand, it could discourage people from leaving most of their estate to charity for fear their wishes could easily be overturned.

The dispute came to the court after the ousted trustees sued.

"The compromise orchestrated by the AG in this case destroys the estate plan Brown had established in favor of an arrangement overseen virtually exclusively by the AG," giving large sums of money to relatives even though they were given little or no control in the singer's original will, Associate Justice John Kittredge wrote.

The fight over Brown's estate even spilled over into what to do with his body. Family members fought over the remains for more than two months, leaving Brown's body, still inside a gold casket, sitting in cold storage in a funeral home. Brown was eventually buried in Beech Island, S.C., at the home of one of his daughters. The family wanted to turn the home into a shrine for Brown similar to Elvis Presley's Graceland, but that idea has not gotten off the ground.

An attorney for Adele Pope ? one of the trustees who appealed ? commended the court for its ruling, which he said would more accurately fulfill Brown's wishes.

"James Brown was certainly devoted to the cause of education," James Richardson said. "Today's decision means that the bulk of his fortune will go to the cause of educating needy children."

McMaster, who left office in 2010, did not immediately comment on the ruling. However, he said in 2011 that "the settlement was a very good one for ... the education of the poor children, because there was a danger that they would get nothing."

Current Attorney General Alan Wilson said he respected the court's decision but felt McMaster had acted legally.

Pirate Bay moves from Sweden to Norway, Spain

(AP) ? Embattled file-sharing site The Pirate Bay is looking for safe havens in Norway and Spain after its Swedish host came under legal pressure to shut it down.

The Swedish Pirate Party, a small political party advocating transparency and freedom online, has provided Internet access to the site for the past three years.

But it's handing over those duties to sister parties in Norway and Spain's Catalonia region following legal threats from the Rights Alliance, a Swedish anti-piracy group representing the entertainment industry, officials for all three parties told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

"Basically, the service that was provided by the Swedish Pirate Party is nowadays provided by the Norwegian Pirate Party, and soon also by the Catalan Pirate Party," said Kenneth Peiruza, a spokesman for the Catalan group.

The Pirate Bay is one of the world's biggest free file-sharing websites, offering millions of users a forum for downloading music, movies and computer games. The site doesn't host any pirated material itself, but acts as an index to help people find files they can share with each other using BitTorrent software. The entertainment industry has failed to shut it down, even after its operators were convicted of copyright violations in Sweden in 2009.

Sara Lindback of the Rights Alliance said the case underlines how difficult it is to combat illegal file-sharing online, but suggested the fight against The Pirate Bay would continue.

"It's a step in the right direction that the service is driven out of Sweden," Lindback said. "But as long as the service is up we will do what we can to protect our rights-holders."

Pirate Party officials said the laws in Norway and Catalonia would make it hard for the entertainment industry to prevent them from offering web hosting services to The Pirate Bay.

By doing so, the parties are only acting as a "digital post office," said Geir Aaslid, leader of the Norwegian Pirate Party. "We're not responsible for the mail passing through the pipeline."

The Pirate Bay didn't comment on the move directly, but changed the name of the site temporarily to The Hydra Bay, an apparent reference to a mythological beast that grows two new heads when one head is cut off.
