Ambassador Andrew Young to keynote first-ever Church Health Conference

Author and civil- and human-rights leader Andrew Young will be the keynote speaker of the first ever Church Health Center conference.

Along with Healthy Communities and Communities of Faith, the CHC's 25th anniversary conference is set for April 4-7 at the Cook Convention Center and Marriott Hotel in downtown Memphis.

While the CHC has hosted many community-based conferences in the past, this year?s conference is the first with a truly national scope and reach.

Organizers said registrations are already pouring in from all over the country from faith community nurses, clergy members, lay health leaders, seminarians and people working in faith-based clinics.

Ambassador Young served as a U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, U.S. Congressman and Mayor of Atlanta.

He is a longtime advocate for public-purpose capitalism, which many credit for helping him reinvigorate the Atlanta economy during his time as mayor. Ambassador Young also led the effort to bring the Centennial Olympic Games to Atlanta.

?We are excited about having Ambassador Andrew Young as our keynote speaker this year,? said Church Health Center Executive Director Dr. Scott Morris. ?His life story and ongoing work will inspire those who come to dig deeper and re-commit themselves to the healing work they?re doing in their congregations, in Memphis and beyond.?

Best-selling author and award-winning journalist William Cope Moyers, who keynoted the 2010 clergy conference, will be back to talk about his experience with addiction and recovery.

CHC's upcoming conference will also explore Dust and Breath, a new book by Church Health Center theologians in residence Kendra Hotz and Matt Mathews. The book explores the theological underpinnings of the Church Health Center?s mission and work and examines why the church should be involved in faith-and-health work. New Direction Christian Church Senior Pastor Dr. Stacy Spencer will then speak to help conference attendees move from the theological to the practical side of health ministry.

The conference will also include two dedicated focus tracks ? one for faith community nurses, and another for people interested in starting faith-based clinics to serve the uninsured:
? The Westberg Symposium - a dedicated conference and retreat for faith community nurses produced in partnership with the International Parish Nurse Resource Center, which became a part of the Church Health Center in 2011.
? An expanded Church Health Center Replication Workshop produced as a new joint ministry with Empowering Community Healthcare Outreach, a Fort Worth, Texas-based not-for-profit organization that brings consultation and expertise to faith-based health ministries.
The conference will include plenary sessions, pre-conference options, workshop tracks, connection opportunities and the sharing of best practices. Early bird registration is now open for a reduced price of $240. The price increases to $300 on Feb. 18 and to $350 on March 1.

Healthy Communities, Communities of Faith is presented by Juice Plus+? and also sponsored by Baptist Memorial Healthcare. Other conference sponsorship and vendor opportunities are available.
