Japan ambassador to Afghanistan Hiroshi Takahashi signed an agreement with the Afghan foreign ministry?s political deputy on Monday, February 11, providing a pledge of more than $13 million for development projects at Behsud and Surkhrod districts of the eastern Nangarhar province. ?The projects will help to improve the living condition of local residents to have a better life. The students should have access to schools and patients must have access to health care centers,? he said, adding that it is in Japan?s interest to improve Afghanistan?s economy.
Japan also previously gave assistance to Afhganistan Rural Rehabilitation and development ministry for development projects in other provinces of Afghanistan, amounting to some $20 million. Takahashi mentioned that the country remains committed to financially support Afghanistan in all sectors. During the Tokyo conference, it pledged the highest donation for Afghanistan, which is over and above the millions of dollars already spent for the country in the past ten years.
Meanwhile, Jawid Lodeen, deputy policy maker of the Afghan foreign ministry, acknowledged the help of Japan in the implementation of various important projects across Afghanistan over the years. According to him, ?The implementation of the projects will have a vital role for human resources and economic development across the country. Japan has been one of the major donors of the Afghan government during the past ten years and has implemented major development projects.? Afghan officials confirmed that the donations given by Japan for specific projects were proposed by the government of Afghanistan.
